They don't cost that much.
I'm 17 and I had the same exact problem with my car.
It is the brake pads. Trust me. Hahah.

Let's further assume that no damage is done to the rotors. (the part the pads rub against to stop the car)
Look for coupons in the newspapers or in the junk mail arriving in your mailbox. Many chain auto repair and parts retailers will offer a deal on brakes. Figure about $120 per axle, including parts and installation. I've seen such a service advertised on television for Midas muffler shops.
The bad news is that the metal to metal grinding noise MAY include a gouge dug into the rotor by the exposed rivets on the pads. You may be able to see through the wheels, or you may have to remove the wheel to see the rotor. It is a disc, with the pads mounted on either side of it. Look on the part of the disc to see if you see a scratch (or worse) a gouge going all the way around the disc. If it is very thin and shallow, it may be all right. If it is wide, deep, or showing multiple scratches, the cost of repair goes up.
The rotor can be "turned," meaning shaved down a bit to even out the surface for a reasonably low cost. This is in addition to the cost of the pads. Worst case is that the rotors may need to be replaced. This brings the cost WAY up to over $200 per axle, even at the discount shops.

Hi!
Sounds like you waited too late. Unfortunately it's going to cost you more for waiting to long.
Brakes has a metallic lining. If you notice when it first start squealing, then you can replace just the pads. But if you wait too lone, then you'll hear a harder grinding like you described. That's the metal pin that keeps the pad align properly. You'll hear the metalic sound as a warning before the pad wears down to the pin. You'll hear the metallic for a few days, then not hear anything for about a week or two. Then you'll hear the hard grinding. What's happening is that the metal pin is grinding into the steel brake drum/rotor. If it's too deep, then the rotor will have to be replaced.
The metallic sound is for you to know it's time to change the pads before the rotor gets damaged.
To have pads replaced is about $125. To replace place the rotor is about another $75 - $100.
Depends where you go.

You could buy your own coil from EBay for $80 at most and install it VERY easily, or somebody / ANYBODY with a few tools could EASILY install it. Brake bleeding is only needed when the brakes are replaced. Therefore, I think the seller is lying. Why would the seller not have bled the brakes when the brakes were replaced? Why would the seller try selling a car that could EASILY be repaired for $100 and sell it in GREAT condition, instead of loosing a lot of money if it "needs work". I'd either get a second opinion, take it to a garage before buying it, or tell the guy you'll buy it AFTER the brakes & coil are fixed (assuming that really fixed it). You'll pay the extra $100 IF that fixes it.

If you have a deep low noise like metal to metal, you probably need to have rotors put on as well.. Pads are pretty cheap.$15-40. rotors are usually $40-100. Replacing only your pads if your rotors are done will only make you have to replace your new pads a LOT sooner. this is because your rotors will tear up your new pads.
doing a brake job(pads and rotors) is usually a pretty simple job. Send me a message and let me know what kind of car it is, and I will give you all the advice I can..
If you take it to a shop for rotor and pad replacement it will cost you $200+. do you know any good ole boys that can help you? If so, I can walk them right thru it.

It probably is your pads. Generally they will start squeaking to let you know they are getting low (they put little chips of ferrite or something in the last 1/4" of pad to make noise).
If it is starting to grind, then your pads are eating into your rotors - and it is imperative that you get them fixed ASAP or you may end up costing yourself a lot more (if you haven't already).
Call around to a few brake places (ask friends or family if they recommend anyone reasonably priced and reliable). Or you might be able to find someone who can do it for you - it is fairly easy, though if your rotors need to be turned you will need to take them to someone (and if they are too worn down, or damaged, then they might require replacement).
I'm fortunate to know how to do all of my own maintenance, brake pads are one of the easiest things to do once you do it.

Brake pads are about $20-30 but if they are scraping metal you will need to replace the rotors too. They cost about $50 depending on what kind of car you drive. These prices don't include labor. Have your brother do it for you.

It does sound like the brakes. The front brakes. I'm not sure where you are from or what kind of car you own or drive but pads for my 2002 Dodge Neon Average about 25.00 dollars here in PA. The average brake pads are normally semi-metallic and the most expensive maybe the carbon-metallic 55.00 here.

Sounds like not only the break pads are gone but are rubbing metal against metal so the rotors may have to be changed also. Depending where you take your vehicle it could cost about $100 per axle to have done. Call around for some quotes. Need to have done ASAP

its most likely your pads, they range in price, id say its probably your front brakes, so you only need 1 set. on averge maybe $ 20- 30 but thats if you know someone to install them for you, otherwise i think a shop charges like $150 to do it
but if you wear it down too much, you might need to replace the rotors too
