Got back from San Francisco a few months ago, to my home county of England. Can I claim the Sales Tax back from purchases made over there (hotels, jeans etc..)?

The only state offering a sales tax refund to foreign visitors is, I believe, Louisiana.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no equivalent of the "VAT" (Value Added Tax) or "GST" (Goods and Services Tax) for foreign visitors purchasing goods or services while travelling in the United States. Thus, there is no rebate.

If you were travelling on business, you MIGHT be able to deduct your legitimate, business-related, expenses from your local and/or national income taxes (consult a UK financial advisor and/or tax expert).

Hopefully, you purchased your merchandise without concern over the tax, got a few bargains during your visit, and, most importantly, enjoyed your stay and will return some day, and will tell your friends all about it!
