I am assuming that x2 is x-squared...

Then assuming what you mean is x2 - (1/x) +1 you just plug x=-3 into all the places you have an x.

If x=-3 then x2=9, 1/x = -1/3

So x2 -1/x +1 = 9 - -1/3 +1 = 10+1/3 (sorry hard to write fractions) - or 34/3 in proper fractions.

Just in case I have read it wrong and you really mean (x2-1)/(x+1) it is the same thing, plug -3 into the solution:

(9-1)/(-3+1) = 8/-2 = -4

Hope that helps - or am I missing something about this problem...

-3 * 2 = -6

-1 / -3 = 0.333333333

so (-6) * 0.333333333 = -2

-2 + 1 = -1
