I hit a curb side (real bad hit) and wall of front tire has chipped a bit. A mechanic checked with some soap water and said no leak and so fine to go. Another shop said it is better to change tire since you cannot assess if there is hidden damage.
What is the risk of not changing the tire, if any?

Also, is there a easy way to find out if the hit has caused any mis-alignment?

The sidewall is probably weakened by the hit. It may cause wobbling when driving or blow out at lower than normal speeds. Unless the steering has changed or you start to notice uneven tire wear, the only way to know if alignment is affected is to have it checked.

It might not leak now but if theres damage to the sidewall of the tire, theres a chance of blowout..Be careful..its the front tire. If you really wont change it, position the chipped tire at the rear. I believe you know the condition of your car, the way it behaves before u hit the curb. If its really that bad a hit, it should cause misalignment. Again having a chip on the tire's sidewall, is risking it all...some nylon plies must have been cut and its just a matter of time before it gives way to pressure.
