Because the university-based schools of journalism that those in U.S. studied at don't require that you study foreign cultures, geography, history or a lot of other subjects. Add to that the shrinkage of western news bureaus in foreign capitals, and you have built-in retardation. When they do get assigned overseas, they stay totally "American". There was a reporter from the Christian Science Monitor who was taken hostage in Iraq and released after several weeks of captivity. When she was taken hostage her Iraqi interpreter was killed. She had been in Iraq over seven years and still needed an interpreter!
The NY Times had a bureau chief in Tokyo for nearly 20 years. In all that time he had never learned to speak one word of Japanese! What credibility does one give to his dispatches?

because a lot of media outlets are run by conservatives that like to miscontrue things to make themselves and america "look better".
