A friend asked me to check his computer.
When the PC is powered on the speaker emits 1 long beep - 2 beeps then a funky sound.

I've a uploaded a video with my cellphone:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MFEVSRqBhQ

My guess is the video chip is damaged and so the image does not come up on the monitor.
Do you think he should buy a new motherboard?

ADDED DETAILS: Ok, I've added a AGP card, the long beep and 2 short beeps are gone, but the last sound is still present. I did put a 333MHz memory module working on my PC but the same problem. Guess is dead?

So, as a rule of thumb if the motherboard beeps it means a component is failed but i can be changed or should the mobo be changed?

if you think its the onboard video of the motherboard just try adding a pci or agp video card and see if that works if it doesn't its probably not the onboard video.

has he been inside the case messing about?
sounds like two problems

2 beeps memory problems
1 long beep video problem..

he will need to have a look at the motherboard manual to see what the beeps actually mean... if he has not got one then he need to go to the manufactures support website and download the one for his motherboard
