a lot of great answers here. i've found that the easiest thing to do to improve gas mileage is to

a. check your tire pressure. it should be somewhere between 30 to 32 psi for your car. this helps a LOT

b. use a fuel injector/carburetor cleaner every 3000 miles or so. if you haven't done it at all or in a while, i suggest using it twice in a row. it helps significantly.

c. make sure your air filter is clean. this can rob performance and fuel economy significantly.

all of these shouldn't cost you more than 50cents, 5$, and 20$ respectively, and they can easily be done by you.

Change the final drive ratio. I did this with my 77 Pontiac Trans Am and got and amazing 21 mpg. And that is with a 6.6 liter engine before fuel injection. It lowered my engine rpm while driving on the freeway and that is what saves gas and engine wear. This is a major undertaking, Your car will take longer to accelerate unless you have a low first gear, I changed the transmission too so my first gear was even lower. I have better acceleration, better gas mileage, better top speed (over 130mph).

Low restriction air intake filter (K&N) and the best free flowing exhaust system you can find. Pump up the tires to the maximum pressure posted on the tire, not the door post.

to achieve a better mileage, you need to reduce the fuel to air ratio, it will lower the cars power and torque but will improve its fuel efficiency. You also need to reduce energy lost to friction, so check and maybe replace oil, align tyres, have the engine timing checked, whole bunch of stuff like that.

there is not much you can as far as aftermarket parts with that car. K&N air filter will help maybe 1 MPG, and a full tune up. tire pressure in important. fuel filter change, with the tune up.

people often say that the correct tire preasure helps to improve milaege.. That's true... Less tire preasure means the tire flattens out .. Therefore more friction with the surface of the road..
Increase your tire preasure to a safe level...
