everybody is going to have their own brand that they swear by with antivirus. I recommend reading reviews and seeing what people say. I myself use nod32 and find that it is not as resource intensive as norton, and is just as good at virus detection, much improved over any freeware antivirus

use a operating system that you don't need to install anti virus software,, Linux,

or the next best thing is never download e-mails on to your computer, always read them though web mail..

never use Limewire or Pc2Pc software.. to download things your not sure about, more often than not you will get a virus....

use Firefox 2 web browser it is more secure once it is setup to delete your history, cookies, and private data on logging off the internet,

I have been using computers 30 yrs and never installed a anti virus software,,, never had a virus when I was using windows,,, now I use Linux and still never had a virus

I prefer Spyware Doctor 5.0 (or newer). It has a wonderful detection library and minimal system usage for real-time protection.

I would have to say Norton Antivirus. It gives you so much control and it doesn't let anything through your internet port without you approving it.
