I want to warn all of you not to use bleach on your sponge and then put it into the microwave. I did this, thought I had all the bleach rinsed out, but when I put it in the microwave it started on fire! Almost ruined my new microwave and the stink lasted for weeks, even using baking soda on it.
So just be careful out there, use one method or the other, not both!

I use sponges but buy new frequently and wash them often in the dishwasher. Mostly I use paper towels and disinfectants. I do not use a sponge for dishes that have to be handwashed. I have a special brush that also gets a new head often.

I don't actually use sponges regularly, I prefer a cloth I can wash. On the occasion I use sponges, I keep them dry between uses and might run them through the dishwasher a time or two, but at the first sign of a musty funk, they're gone.

Ewwwwwwwwww gross nasty icky dirty sponges!

I change my dish sponge every Sunday. When the kids and I do our Sunday cleaning... the sponge gets thrown out and a new one is put in its place. A sponge is a breeding ground for bacteria.

I don't use sponges because they harbor millions and millions of bacteria. You could use bleach or zap it in the microwave to kill the germs, but I prefer a dish cloth, dish brush, or paper towels for my cleaning. Good luck. 2D
