So long as you are in good health I wouldnt be too concerned.
You need to be monitored as its harder on your body to produce a healthy baby, this is what causes most defects. down syndrome is basically caused by compromised DNA due to the age of the eggs in an older womans body. The egg that made the baby is also 39 years old, in some cases the DNA is compromised. But not in all cases. They will test you later in pregnancy.
In all honesty, unless defects run in your family its not something to worry too much over. Women are having babies later and later in life, and both live on to tell the tale.

Yes, advanced maternal age, does increase your risk of certain types of birth defects. But...that doesnt mean that taking good care of yourself and getting proper prenatal care cant help either.
Taking folic acid before pregnancy definitely cuts down on a number of spinal defects. Knowing your risks will also prepare you for any possible defects.
Im 37, will be 38 when I deliver my second baby. The first baby the doctors terrified me with every "what if" case they could throw at me. My son was born perfectly happy and healthy.
Its a crap shoot at our age, but if you want a child, that doesnt mean you should give up on it. It just means you have to be aware of risks.

Hello,
My advise to you would be to take your prenatal vitamins and make sure you drink plenty of orange juice! Not everyone had birth defects! GOOD LUCK!

you really need to see your doc. He can tell you about the risks and what can be done to relieve them. If you are pregnant, an ultra sound and amniocentesis will determine the condition of the baby. Good luck.

I know women older then you who have given birth to happy healthy babies. I would not worry at all, but discuss your concerns with your dr to ease your mind.

Your doctor should automatically have a couple of more tests done since you are over 35. However, don't stress about it, eat healthy as there is nothing more you can do about it as it is up to God.
