Your machine is infected! Pop-ups are mostly caused by adware, spyware, and other malicious and unwanted software and using pop-up blocker won't help an infected PC. Since no single program can detect and eradicate all spyware, I recommend using multiple anti-spyware programs. Ad-aware and Spybot are among the best (they are free), but feel free to use additional programs if you have a nasty infection.

Running these programs in Safe Mode (tap F8 as the computer boots up and choose to boot to safe mode) can be more effective.

If you do not have an updated anti-virus program always running, you need to get one. Install only 1, but you can get AVG, Avast! or AntiVir for free.

Yahoo's blocker will not help you nor will an anti-spyware program.

I am willing to bet that after you re-formated your computer (what you call re-boted) that you did not go to Windows Updates and re-update your computer back to the Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) that you had before the re-format.

I also bet that most of your pop-ups say "Messenger Service" on the title bar at the top?

Versions of XP before SP2 did not have a pop-up blocker ,which is why it is no longer there!

Versions of XP before SP2 did not have Messenger Service disabled which left it vulnerable to that type of pop-ups.

The solution is to go to Windows Updates and update your computer with all available updates and there will be a lot...maybe a hundred or more! You will then no longer have Messenger Service pop-ups and you will have a pop-up blocker to deal with other types of pop-ups. Plus your computer will be 1000% more secure. An updated XP is a huge security risk.

Keep going back to Windows Update until you get Service Pack 2 and then go back again as there is actually update to updates! This process will take several hours to get all needed critical and security updates.

To get to Windows Updates click Tools then Windows Updates.

Am I correct in my diagnosis?

Good luck!

Spybot, search and destry, is the best choice, run it and it will kill the infection...then, download firefox, and or flock, both are good web browsers. they come with a good pop up blocker in it.... but you can even add more pop up protection from the add ons.

I use all in one secret maker, and LOVE it! It blocks pop ups, banners, and cleans history and clears cache every time you close your browser. It comes with spyware and virus protection too.

Only draw back, you have to hold control key down when you want to open a new page....

Best part........ It's FREE!
