It ended over 200 years ago, so my guess would be no one. It's a ploy to get people off their lazy a**es to vote. No one I know owned or knew a slave. I think It's a reason for people to get sympathy and the government may be hoping to get black people to stop using it as a crutch. Good luck with that!!!

They were apologizing to all slaves that lived in the US from the year 1776-1865. Who else?

I'm not making light of the conditions or treatment of slaves during that period of history. But the decendants of those slaves have so much more opportunity here in the US today than they would have in Africa.

My forefathers owned a few slaves. And they must have treated them ok because after they were free, they stayed and continued to work with my forefathers. My grandmother's nanny was the daughter of one of the family slaves. My grandmother's mother died when she was very young and her nanny was like a mother to her. My family also had one of the first known integrated cemetaries. They were slaves and were not treated as equals, but there seemed to have at least been some respect.

I've never owned a slave and think it's a terrible thought. But I make no apology for the actions of my ancestors. I didn't choose the family I was born into.

Are there slaves from before it was declared and enforced as illegal i.e. before the Civil war, still alive? If not there is no one to apologize to. My ancestors enslaved my ancestors and none of them apologized. In fact it would be hard to find a race that didn't use slavery or that wasn't enslaved at one time or another. I'd think that a huge "thank you" is due to the ones ending it by those that were enslaved.
