Congressional Approval at Lowest Point Ever
Did you see this? "A new Gallup Poll finds Congress' approval rating the lowest it has been since Gallup first tracked public opinion of Congress with this measure in 1974. Just 18% of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing, while 76% disapprove, according to the August 13-16, 2007, Gallup Poll. That 18% job approval rating matches the low recorded in March 1992, when a check-bouncing scandal was one of several scandals" -- ha! Yeah, the House bank and the House post office. You know, it's amazing. Have you seen any stories out there, folks, on what the Republicans need to do to win back Congress? Every year after 1994, when the Republicans took over Congress, the Drive-By Media was obsessed with what the Democrats "had to do to win back Congress." I haven't yet seen a story on what the Republicans need to do to win back Congress, given all this.

It’s obvious that in 2008 we have to get rid of the rest of the Republicans so that Congress can actually get something done.

The approval rating is 3 points less than what it was when it was controlled by the Republicans.
Take a look at 2006. Congress never had a period with an approval rating above 29%. Six times below 25%.
Since 2002. A steady decline.
But the biggest problem with this poll?
In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.
So I don't put too much faith in them.
With the fact that almost anything the Democrats can pass can be vetoed and since we do not have enough in power to override that veto, what exactly would you like them to do?
As for immigration, wasn't it the Republicans that stopped that, even though the President wanted it??

The current situation (very minor Democratic majority while Republicans have executive branch) means that Congress has ridiculous difficulty in passing any laws that both parties do no agree on. As for the Republicans, they probably won't win more seats this time around. They have failed to resolve Iraq (which they originally entered), immigration, and most other issues. This election, a new set of seats goes up, which the Dems have a shot at.

The reason the approval rating is down is largely because most people aren't paying enough attention to what is going on. Congress tries to put through laws, but when they get to the desk of Republican President Bush, he vetoes them-- not because the American people disagree, but because he does (or his very wealthy friends do.)
Oh, and also: people are really upset we can't do anything to Gonzales for his firing of the attorneys...merely because he somehow lost a chunk of his brain. (Or was told to.)
Also, the things people are angry about, such as the wiretapping and the chips in passports...were republican inventions. The democrats who did vote for them did so because if they didn't get passed through democrats would be seen as weak on "national security." When in reality, what we the people want to see is less big brother and more republic.

Um, Democrats have only had Congress for about eight months now. And this poll is not new.
You think it will take 8 or 9 months to undo six years of a Republican Congress?
And to top it off, Bush is by passing congress to push his agenda. Nice huh? I'm sorry, it's the President and his abuse of the veto and Republicans blocking legislation that we can blame for the low ratings. Congress is congress to a lot of people and they just see nothing being done by both sides.

It is interesting that Congress is at lowest level of approval and so is the president.
Sort of tells you that the people of this country are sick to death of our governments, and the parties and the crooked politicians.
Maybe it is time for a new party and some fresh blood.

since it's almost 50/50 in the congress it is only logical to assume that Americans are peeved at BOTH parties...when this has happened in the past (coupled with an unpopular prez) voters have gone with having a different party in the W.H.

Don't tell me you are surprised.
If the Republicans want back in, they need to come up with a plan they will back (an mean) to get this illegal immigration problem under control. Good border control with fencing and armed defenders of the border, employer sanctions--and I mean jail and huge fines (if the jobs dry up, most will go back on their own), state and local partnership in enforcement, quick and certain deportation, end chain (family) immigration and no citizenship for children born to illegals. Also, Official English recognition.
They would win in a landslide.

With the small majority the Democrats have in the senate, there is not much they can do when the president finally decided to use his veto power. Most people I know do not follow what is going on in our governement so they think the dems should be able to wave a magic stick and end the war. It is not that easy.
