i normally feed my tortoise grasses and weeds, dandelion and things, but i wanted to know if i put hay (from a pet shop or just hay like a hay bail) in to my tortoise's home for him to eat and keep him warm would it be bad for him?

many thanks

alice.

What kind of torise is it?

Usually the types of hay that I have seen at pet stores are orchard grass hay and Timothy Hay. These are fine for a tortoise. I buy the packages of hay that are sold for rabbbits. Just make sure you look at what is in it. You don't want anything that has additives. You just want natural orchard grass, or timothy hay.
I have a Leopard Tortoise, and this is what I feed her. You could place it throughout the enclosure for your torise to hide in as well as nibble on inbetween feedings.
You can look online for a caresheet for you type of tortoise, and it will tell you what type of hay is recommend for it, but you most likely can't go wrong with Timothy hay, or Orchard Grass hay.

Timothy hay, whether from an overpriced pet shop or a better priced Feed and Grain store is good. Alfalfa is not so good but OK in small amounts.

Hay is not the right diet for all tortoises, but for those that it IS good for, it makes a nice snack and even is good to spread around to make a dry habitat, or even piled up to dig into.

yeah pretty much just don't over feed him or anything but it will keep him very warm and comfortable so yeah pet store hay will work just as fine as regular hay because if you get horse stable hay it could have bugs or something in it that could kill your tortoise.

Stick with the grasses as much as you can.
Hay may seem like a cost effective solution but from what I've read, grasses are what would be better.

Below I found some links for you which can help you
learn more about them. Please read up when you get a moment.
