My daughter has has very painful gas/digestive system problems since she was born. She was colicky for the first 2.5 months of life, and from there she just seemed to get gassy at night time. She is now 5 months old and she still can't sleep through the night. She doesn't get up to feed, but because she's uncomfortable or in pain. Sometimes she wakes up fussing, sometimes it's full out screaming. My doctor told me there is nothing we can do to help her, does anyone have any suggestions? I've given her gripe water and that helped when she was really little, but not so much now, and Ovol... but she seems to be worse after I give her Ovol.

Thank you for all the answers... I don't even know really if it's gas. She does fart often, but when she's crying, I can't relieve her by pushing her feet up to her belly, or rubbing her belly or anything. My doctor hasn't ruled anything out because she thinks it's nothing. I'm just worried because she cries in her sleep, she's not even awake and she cries, arches her back, and I can't even hold her to my shoulder because she wants to arch backwards!

Feed her only a couple of ounces in between burps. And make sure she burps -- it'll help alot! Also, make sure she is elevated when she's feeding.

Besides Gripe water, these are just a few things we tried with our son. He was like that the first 5-6 months, also. It's tough.

Good luck! Hope this helps!

Am not sure if you're breast feeding or formula, if your breast feeding, it could be your diet & what you're eating, if formula sometimes you have to change formula's - probably a good idea to check with the doc for more suggestions or before changing formula's especially if the baby is on any kind of specialized formula. Gas does happen tho...Take Care & Congrats

If you are breastfeeding stop drinking cow's milk and avoid as much dairy as possible. My son was very colicky and gassy until I did this now he's perfect! Mylicon for infants only works if you give it to them before EACH and EVERY feeding, but it can help.

I use to take lay my daughter on the floor and baby exercise her...she loved the special game we played like moving her legs back and forth and swinging her arm , rolling her from tummy to back , putting her up in the crawling position...this will help relieve some gas...but not all, my daughter had a constipation problem till she was 3. once she was potty trained all seem to work well. Good luck.

I would try Mylicon. It is supposed to be really good stuff. I never had an issues with my children and when I did I just used light Karo. I mixed a couple teaspoons in the bottle and that worked. If your child has serious problems with it try the Mylicon or ask a pharmacist what else they have for babies.

I used to rub from the chest down to the hips on my baby's belly, not hard but with alittle force to push out the air.

please it isn't a two second deal either. Just lay her down by you maybe on the floor and sit beside her. rub downward for about 30 minutes or more, she may pass the gas right away and it might take longer, you can take breathers but it does work.

Have you tried Mylicon? It is a miracle drug, you can get it at Walmart and it is safe to use every feeding. When my son gets gas real bad I will give him that and lay him on his belly. I rub his back and he burps or farts it out in like 2 minutes. Good Luck.

I am sorry, but have never heard of gripe water. ( I'm in the US)

Is it gas, or is it digestive system problems? What did your doc say specifically?

It sounds like it could be acid reflux. My daughter had it at 6 weeks. Our doc taught us how to treat it. Here's what we did.
(It worked like a CHARM)

1. Keep your baby sitting UP for 45 minutes after every feeding. No exceptions. You may sit her in a bouncer seat, or a swing, but do not lay her down flat.

2. Put her crib up on blocks at the head end, so she always sleeps up at an angle. Make sure she doesn't roll down the bed. Or you can use a foam wedge for her to recline on.

3. Burp her after every 2 oz of milk/formula.

4. Use similac advance milk based formula with iron, or the walmart equivalent (half the price). Use Dr. Brown's bottles.

5. Very important: Add 1tablespoon gerber single grain rice cereal to every 2oz of prepared formula. (you'll need a faster nipple in the bottle to let this come out, like a level 3). Rice can also help her sleep through the night. Don't add any more rice than the above measurement..it can cause vomiting.

6. Don't give her any acid reflux medication..over the counter or even prescription. It can cause projectile vomiting.

Acid reflux is a result of a purely liquid diet. This helped our baby sooo much. I hope this helps you. My doc also said that our baby had a really tough time breasfeeding, and the a/r was to blame as well.
