A brave lion has showed up in the neighborhood. I have discovered my 8 year son has been hiding him in the basement and feeding it and everything. I want to contact the zoo but my son is so attached. He did care for it for 3 weeks, maybe the family could make it a family pet because our dog "Sandy" went missing 2 weeks ago.

I have to agree with many of the answers you've gotten. Please call the humane society or who ever is in your area. Lions are beautiful and amazing to watch, but they are a wild creature and have primitive urges. I hate to say it to, but that is probably where Sandy went. Your son may be attached, but he'll get over it. See if you can take him to visit it once it has a home fit for it. The zoo just might be the one to call, then you can definitely take your son to see it. Please do this before your beloved child goes missing too. And it won't be the lions fault, but yours for trying to keep a wild creature as a pet.

actually no they aren't. My friend when I was growing up family owned an African Lion, This cat used to back his mother up on the back of the couch when no one else was home. She could not move until her husband came home from work, (this was before cell phones)she would spend hours there terrified, also they used this cat as their sons mascot for his football team and when the boy was climbing a tree at the ballpark, the cat swiped the lower part of his calf (playing) and it ripped the muscles from his bone, this child had 12 hours of surgery and is permanently handicapped in this leg. They ended up donating this cat to Lion Country Safari in Palm Beach, Florida

Your extremely lucky that this lion is gentle with children. You can keep it, but you shouldnt keep it in your house. That can be dangerous, if it gets hungry while your gone. Together you should make it something fun, by building a large outdoor fenced pen. Make sure the fence is high, or else it might escape. For food, get a metal slot. If the lion is extremely hungry, it might bite you on accident. You can get large toys, like tires, big balls. Research a lion's habitat on the internet or a book, and go to a gardening store. Get plants that will make it feel like at home. Make sure to contact an animal expert, so that you and your son can play with him safely. Make sure to include your son in lots of stuff, like gardening, fencing, maybe even building a shade shelter for it. If your dog comes back, maybe you should contact your trainer. She will decide if its safe to introduce Sandy to the lion. She will also know the safest way. By including your son in activities, he will be more likely not to do bad stuff like go in the fence without permission. Set up certian times/days for him to go in, so that he doesnt get hurt. What time/day does the lion seem calmest?

HOPE THIS HELPS

So the dog went missing, huh? Very interesting! Either the lion ate the dog or the dog was smart enough to get the hell out of there.

well 4 one, u HAVE TO BE LISCENCED to keep it. if people find out u r secretly keepin one, theyll call the police and come take it away. :(
plus, around kids, umm..NUH UH!!!! bad bad bad!!! lions are wild and could instantly turn on u and kill your child. plus, just showing up???????? it must have escaped from a place. plus, lions arent a "family pet" like a dog. they are very dangerous, and must have proper foods fed, like meats and so, and if u want to keep it, well, call the zoos around your area or other places (just n case it was stolen then lost :x
then if nothing, get liscenced, build a LARGE FENCED AREA (tall fence too!) and so
BUT i HIGHLY reccomend u dont keep it as a family pet especially when u got kids.
good luck

I'm hoping it's an imaginary lion...

If it is really a REAL lion, call 911!

The lion has been around for 3 weeks, your dog has been missing for 2 weeks... there's a good chance that "cute" lion ate your dog!

Is this a joke? I babysat a 4-month old lion cub at our animal rescue and he mauled me. Most of the time he was loving, but when he got pissed...look out!! They eat A LOT and it is very expensive to keep one. Not only are there the legalities of having one, but if you are serious, you are just asking for your son to get seriously hurt or killed. I'm used to handling exotics and wild animals, and I'm covered in scars from ours.

I love lions and think having one as a pet would be awesome.

Unfortunately, he would probably end up making me his dinner one night so I think I will just go visit them at the zoo instead.
