If you've never signed a contract then you're under no obligation to pay him anything. However, if you paid him for shots with no contract, I wouldn't hold your breath for him getting you any work. His scam is to get money for the shots.

I assume you signed a contract with him. Read the contract. If it says that he gets 20% of all jobs, then you do have to pay him regardless of whether he found you the job or not. On the other hand if the contract specifies that he only gets 20% on the jobs he found you, then no. I strongly suspect that your contract states that you have to pay him 20% of all jobs, since some of the jobs he got you allowed you to expand your portfolio and thereby be able to get other jobs. Sorry, no idea about whether 20% is high or not.

20% is standard for models and even though you got the job on your own it's a good policy to have your agent formalize the contract for your job because they know the ins and outs of these things better than you. You can however negotiate a smaller percentage for any job that you got on your own because you are bringing your agent the job and not the other way around, know what I mean? Your agent may actually negotiate a better fee for you or better working conditions. you never know

20% is pretty standard in the industry as far as I know. Most agencies where I live take 20%. Unless, your an actor and in the union then they take 10%.
You say you 've not signed a contract. So, your relationship is non-exclusive. Meaning you can also sign with another agent who may get you work.
Any time I've found an audition on my own I've called my agent to advise them that they may or may not get a call. I've also asked them to take a smaller commission as it's my contacts that have gotten me the work.

You are supposed to, when you have an agent, give them their percentage, however you got the job. After all, they're doing a lot of work to get you auditions, whether you're going out or not. Of course, this only applies if it's a legitimate agent who is really really working with you. It may be a judgment call on your part.

Presumably you have a contract with your agent, and that should cover the work you find yourself. But whether you are obliged to pay or not, paying the commission (a) shows the agent you are hireable, and (b) that you are honest.
