It is true, you automatically become the 4 cede if you will, and it works in the bracket format. You would end up playing the 1 cede. The one exception to this is if the wildcard is in the same division, in that event it would become the second cede that they would play. It should be explained in the following example:

So if the playoffs started today it would be Seattle vs. Boston in the A.L. In the N.L. there is currently a tie so San Diego, if they ended up getting in would play the current #1 cede the Mets, but if Philadelphia got in they cannot play the Mets in the first round as they are in the same division so they would play the current #2 cede Arizona.

Per league, the three division winners are seeded 1-2-3 by record (there are tiebreaker methods but these have rarely been needed). The wildcard is seeded #4 regardless of its record.

Division Series (2-2-1 format) pairings are 1-4 and 2-3 UNLESS the wildcard and the #1 seed are from the same division. In that case, the pairings are 1-3 and 2-4. Higher seed gets Game 1 homefield.

LCS (2-3-2 format) again awards Game 1 homefield to the higher seed (note that this then is never the wildcard team).

In the World Series (2-3-2 format), Game 1 homefield is predetermined.
