It of course would be an American defeat. From all appearances, and this includes the public statements from Democratic politicians, they are more concerned with retaining control of Congress than they are about doing the right and moral thing in Iraq. I find that kind of behavior despicable.
The hate Bush thing was started by a person who wanted to defeat Bush in 2004, it was picked up by the media and all of the Democrat politicians jumped on board. I read a blog the other day that showed when and how the hate bush syndrome began, Americans did not hate bush until this campaign started and I believe it has backfired. If I am correct this will show in the 2008 elections in that those who are running against Bush will not fare well

Pulling out of Iraq is no more a defeat than a single man failing to push the Washington Monument down the Mall is a defeat.
We are incapable of making Iraq into the country we want it to be. The Iraqi people are the only ones who can make permanent changes and decide the future of their country.
Realizing this fact and coming to terms with it is not a defeatist attitude. It is an epiphany.

I have to agree with Sabrina. If we don't know what victory is supposed to look like, how can we define defeat?
Some say that victory would be to leave behind a stable, democratic, pro-American government that is able to provide security for the country. And if we stay until THAT happens, we'll be there for the rest of our lives. I can't think of a middle-eastern country where that definition is upheld. The only stable governments are not democratic (Jordan, Saudi Arabia) or not pro-American (Iran) or can't provide security for their people (Lebanon).
Is it defeat to recognize that it was a mistake to invade in the first place? How many lives are you willing to squander before you will admit the mistake?
So this would be Bush's defeat - he wanted this war, he started this war, he didn't leave once his mission was accomplished, he didn't handle it properly at all.
This war violated every tenent of the Powell doctrine.

Teh defeat in Iraq IS (not "would be") Bush's defeat-not America's. There is no way to "win" against a people fighting to get their country back from a foreign invader bent on establishing an empire--which is what Bush wants to do. And that is not what America is about. Bush's actions in iq mark him as being totallly UNAmerican. The same is true of those who support his attempt to conquer a country that never attacked us, nor even had ties to the people that did.

i think it would be an American defeat because in the end it would effect us all no matter who our president was
i dont believe democrats think victory is a bad thing but they simply dont see victory as a possibility based on the way the war is going
THE DEMOCRATS DO NOT HATE AMERICA!!!!!!!
i dont kno how to make this any clearer. not supporting the war does not put u in the same league as terrorists who would lik to hijack planes, fly them into buildings, and kill 3000 people in the process
i wouldnt even say they hate bush because i think everyone knows hes a decent guy but they believe that he has instated failed policies that are bringing 15 to 20 soldiers home every month in flag draped coffins

Why do you think Democrats hate America? Because Fox Noise says so?
And who are all these macho answerers to this question and why aren't they fighting for their country?
Bush screwed up as usual with Iraq. And the Taliban (who supported bin Laden) is gaining ground in Afghanistan.
America cannot win a victory in Iraq. It is impossible. And do you even know who says so?
THE PENTAGON!!!!
So, did you learn anything?
Or do you think the Pentagon is all Democrats?
There's no limit to dumbness.

If we leave Iraq the Shiites will win. If we stay ten years and leave, the Shiites will still win. They are the majority. If Iraq becomes a democracy the Shiites will win. So we are arming and training the enemy at this point. As long as we are there we are the enemy.
It's Bush's War, it makes no sense, why wouldn't it be his defeat. Look at Vietnam, the Communist won, so what!

What constitutes a defeat in Iraq? It seems to me that the coalition is already defeated. Murder and Mayhem are rife throughout Iraq and will continue to be so. It matters not how long Coalition troops remain there, the moment that they go, the zealots will take over and the country will become another thorn in the side of the West. Is this what American boys are giving their life for?

First of all, could you please explain to me why you discount all the Republicans who are opposed to the war, and give ownership of opposition to this war only to Democrats?
And then... why is it that no war supporter can ever define what "victory in Iraq" is?
They always come back with that stupid, "Well, it depends what the definition of 'is' is" statement, but the truth is, you need to define victory in a war. You need to have an objective. And the objective that war supporters like to throw around is "defeat terrorism." And if you think for a minute that we're going to do that by invading Iraq, you've got another thing coming. The entire Middle East hates us, and fosters terrorists who spend their entire day plotting to kill us.
So seriously, tell me, how will we know that we have "achieved victory in Iraq"? Because I promise you, it isn't like a video game, where a disembodied voice tells you when the game's over. You need to have a goal, and a strategy to achieve that goal.
I think we have neither. And that's why I think we will lose this war.
Okay, skippy?

They hate Bush, twice he beat the best they had to offer.
Now they are willing to do or say anything to regain power.
They see a defeat in Iraq as a spring board to the White House.
