I politely disagree with John. While fertilizer will burn your grass lime should not. Generally the lime you would purchase to fertilize your garden or lawn is pelletized lime sold in the garden section. A major brandname is Nutrilime. If this is not white enough you may need to purchase quick lime from a farm or animal store which is often used in barns to cut manure. I'd suggest using a lawn drop spreader (Not a broadcast) and duct taping closed the bottom grate except for a portion in the middle the width of the stripe you wish to apply. Lime is alkaline and will generally "sweeten" the soil. If you are concerned about long term effects, dilute it with a garden hose or mow over it to spread it out and then reapply. I'lll bet you can buy a used drop spreader at a garage sale this time of year for a whole $15. Good Luck.

Most lines painted on a sports field are lime not paint,I think the same machine that lines driveways would work probably, but for a back yard I would take two board about 3/4 thick. Then separate them the width you want the lines to be and scab both ends to hold the width. Lay down your guide and paint the lines with your lime slurry.

Most field line markers use lime, not paint. Lime will burn the grass. Almost anything you mark the grass with that is semi permanent will do some damage to the grass.

Here is a site that sells Field Line Markers and offers a paint that they claim does not harm the grass.
