Bush Pledges Federal Support for Minneapolis Bridge Recovery

MINNEAPOLIS —
President Bush said Tuesday the federal government will use its power to accelerate Minnesota's recovery from a bridge disaster and flash flooding.

Bush's comments here, after a briefing from federal and state authorities, were meant as a boost of confidence for a state that has dealt with twin crises this summer.

The Interstate 35W bridge collapsed into the Mississippi River nearly three weeks ago, killing at least 13 people and shutting down a major transportation artery. And over the weekend, heavy Midwest storms and flooding killed at least 21, seven of them in Minnesota.

Bush confronted both topics before heading nearby for a Republican fundraiser.

"Our job now is to cut through the bureaucracy, as best as possible, and get the people down here a new bridge," Bush said from the Minneapolis/St. Paul Air Reserve Station.

Bush commended those who have led recovery efforts, including military divers who have searched for bodies. He personally met with about 20 of the divers to thank them.

"The spirit that caused the recovery to be well coordinated is the very same spirit that's going to cause this bridge to get rebuilt," Bush promised.

With the search for bodies over at the site of the interstate bridge collapse, authorities will focus on removing tons of wreckage from the Mississippi River so a replacement bridge can be built over the next year.

Bush on Tuesday declared an emergency exists in the state, freeing up the city and state for more federal aid in their recovery efforts.

On the flooding, Bush said the government would move quickly to process requests for help from Minnesota, so that residents could count on a "flood of help" to come down.

He later attended a fundraiser for Sen. Norm Coleman, a Republican whose seat is considered vulnerable in 2008. The event raised $1.2 million for Coleman and the Minnesota Republican Party.

No kidding! The states and cities need to take a better look at how they are running things. Bush is not to blame for the poor choices, management, and spending habits of other elected officials.(No matter if they are Democrat or Republican)

The feds take the largest chunk of the state’s residents’ money through taxes and then mete it out to the states to repair and maintain the federal highway system.

The Minnesota bridge was part of the federal interstate highway system.

Edit: Oh, and the governor of Minnesota is a Republican.

Let me see - gee, y'know what? The Republican governor's states' infrastructure is just as bad off as in other states. While New York had a Republican governor, we had several bridges collapse, costing lives and mucho dinero. The sumb itch didn't make the slightest effort to prevent it.
As for Bush - his administration was told about the sorry state of New Orleans' flood control dikes and did nothing. He's been told about the sorry state of the infrastructure in his own state of Texas, and did nothing about it while he was governor there and hasn't done a thing about it since he's been President-select. Point yer finger at Dems and you've got three other fingers pointing right back at you.
I say, kick 'em ALL in the nuts, Dems and Repubs alike! Stomp their faces until they get busy and FIX this crap!

From someone who really knows the answer, democrat governors are much more interested in spending money on their pet projects that support their biggest supporters.

Here in LA, governor Blanco wanted to spend $400 million to build a sugar refinery about 10 miles away from another that was built just 6 years earlier. The first mill has yet to produce a profit or even break even. But the purposed new mill was really wanted by one of her biggest contributors who was complaining about the cost of transporting the sugar cane to the current mill. His complaint was about the roads, traffic and fuel costs. Studies indicated that an expenditure of about $100 million would have eliminated all the complaints, but this guy wanted his own mill. Blanco agreed and pushed legislation.

Thank God SOME LA legistators, mostly republican, have a little common sense!

Simple--that bridge is part if the Interstate highway system--thus it belongs to the FEDERAL government--and it's their responsibility.

So why doesn't the GOP tak responsibility for THEIR failure to adequately fund maintainance of the infrastructure?

Because bashing President Bush will get more liberal voters to support you rather then actually doing a good job.
