The letters were from Jerry and he wrote them when he was alive. He had been diagnosed with a brain tumor or other terminal condition. She didn't think they were letters from heaven; Jerry had lived several months after his diagnosis and had had time to prepare for his death, and to find a way to help her cope in the aftermath. Because they were soul mates, Jerry knew what she would be thinking and how she would be reacting. He had given the letter to her mom with instructions when to pass it on and not to say anything.
