Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It's filled with action the whole way through because Harry doesn't go to school this year. You might want to read the first six first though.

I would say The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis. I absolutely love it. I must have read it about 100 times, as I start at the first book and read through to the end of the 7th book, by which time I'm in the mood for reading the 1st book again so I go back and start again

Other than Harry Potter books, I would venture to say the Collected Sherlock Holmes stories, The Lord of the Rings, The Khazar Dictionaries, Don Quixote, or any of the Faust or Arthurian legends put to writing.

Transformation by Carol Berg. I've read many books, classic and modern, and none have left as big an impact on me. The feeling you get once you put it down is unlike anything else.

'The C Programming Language' by Brian W. Kernighan and Dennis Richie. It's so good that I took it into the delivery room to read while my wife and I were waiting for her to go into labour.
If you'd asked me 20 years ago I would have said 'Illuminations' by Arthur Rimbaud. 10 years ago I would have said 'Ulysses' by James Joyce. And I still think they're great, but K&R just has the edge.
