FIRST... ensure that the electricity is OFF (even if there ARE no ceiling lights) !! Nothing worse than hooking into some Romex with a wrecking-bar on accident.

Then... clear out that room, punch a whole with a hammer into the plasterboard and START PULLING !!

Once it's all down, you pull out the nails or back out the screws from the joists...

And you HIRE a local kid to do the clean up.

if the plaster board ceiling has an artex finish applied to it, you should have it checked out for an asbestos content, as some textured coatings contained asbestos (chrysotile) before 1999. If it only has a skimming on the plasterboard, then simply punch a hole between two joists and start prising the board from the joists. always wear the correct PPE & RPE.

Just knock a hole in the ceiling and pull the plasterboard down. it is not hard . when it has all been removed then pull all the old plasterboard nails out of the wooden joists ready for a new ceiling.

remove furniture, cover or remove carpets, yank it down with a crowbar. watch out for pipes and cables

its going to get a mess no matter what you do so best get it over with on half an hour.

If you step back and think it looks bad, just be thankful its not lathe and plaster - now that really is a mess.

Is there insulation above the ceiling? I usually move any insulation first, before tearing down the ceiling, makes for an easier cleanup, particularly the blown in type insulation.

You can cut some sheetrock the same size as the hole and screw it to a wood strip that overlaps the existing ceiling. Once in place, you can fill with joint compound. You put screws through the patch into the wood strip and screws through the existing ceiling into the ends of the wood strips.
