Did Tolkien ever indicate what age we are in right now as compared to his writings?

We know from the books that "hobbits are now scarce", and judging from the end of LOTR I would say that we are still in the "age" that began with the defeat of Sauron and the exodus of the elves. I believe that this is what Tolkien intended as well - that we, in the "age of humans", have followed the age described in his books, and in this age all other races have become "less".

If anyone owns the lord of the rings special edition 12 disc set and has watched the biography park it says that Tolkien never had set a timeline but the books themselves were based on his WW experiences. Seeming as he wrote the silarmillion (what started LOTR) in the trenches themselves.

There is no direct mention of a connection between the LOTR timeline and ours. There has been speculation that he used WWII as the background, and if you place the map of middle earth against the map of europe the Shire is generally where GB is and Mordor in the area of Germany. The fact that he wrote the stories in pieces he sent to his son added to this legend. he never confirmed this one way or another. But, for timeline, I think it is like Star Wars - a long time ago in a galaxy far far away...
