Precognition dreams are dreams that tell you WHAT is going to happen. For example, dreaming that you are going to get a letter from an old flame on Tuesday morning. Then, on Tuesday morning, you go to the mail box and there is the letter just like in your dream.
Premonition dreams are dreams that tell that SOMETHING is going to happen, but you may not know exactly what. These dreams are closely linked to the EMOTIONS of the event.
For example, I know someone who had a premonition dream about he and his wife being struck head-on by a passenger bus. This was greatly unnerving for him, because he "felt" all the emotions involved. Terror, helplessness, and "such a waste" of life. Later that week was 11 September 2001.
While his dream did not predict the events of September 11th, he did have a premonition about a terrible even which caused the needless loss of life.
CHARMED has done a disservice in calling Phoebe's visions "premonitions" because she gets explicit detail from them.
