My lawn is covered by crab grass and I try pulling it out but it leaves more bare spots on my lawn then more of the crab grass and weeds seem to come and grow. I have a cat that goes outside, therefore, I don't want anything toxic on my lawn.

Hi - most of the answers here so far here are NOT really what you are looking for, they do suggest toxic items...

There is no quick solution... but there is a very effective long term solution that works.
High growing grass -3 inches or more will largely crowd out crab grass. Keep a mower set at this height for an entire season will have an effect.
This strategy will work best in conjunction with a preemergence granular spread onto the lawn prior to it's growth.

If one wants to remain toxic free they can use Corn Gluten... which is totally non toxic and by far as effective, if not more effective, than many chem' products. This is best used twice a year... in Fall and Spring.

In fact, the only time to really fight CG is when you don't see it- it's too late to prevent it once its in season but you can begin treatment anytime.

Round Up's formula has been changed recently because it was about to be banned due to it's toxic levels and the effect it has particularly on amphibians.

As suggested above, a weed torch and pulling the weeds out by hand are also effective in controlling the weeds after they have grown.

Get some "weed & feed" and mix it with 5 parts of water in a watering can and wet the crabgrass. The weeds will turn brown in 6 days. The chemicals are not very toxic and will be safe once it has dried.

I know with Ortho Weed-b-Gon Crabgrass killer, once it is dry it is safe for kids and pets, so keep the cat in the house for a few hours. Good Luck!!

Well, was it there before you had a cat? It's perhaps generated by the cat itself.

As cool as they might look, the cats are hunters deep inside and if they could spit venom, they obviously would (the kitties spit... air... when they are angered or frightened) only to favor natural selection.
