Don't feel a wally - if this is your first child you won't know what to expect and they won't think you're a wally for asking. Some of the answers you've been given so far are from people in America where the procedure will be different. I'm 10.5 weeks pregnant right now so I've been through the booking appointment you are asking about and this is what happened:

Before the appointment I had to fill out a long questionnaire with personal details and medical history. If you haven't been given it in advance you'll be doing that at the appointment. You'll have a urine sample checked for any problems. You'll be asked if you're taking folic acid (which hopefully you are). The midwife will fill out forms for your maternity exemption card so you get free prescriptions and dental treatment - that will be sent off and you'll receive the card through the post. The midwife will check your due date and book you in for a 12 week ultrasound scan. You'll get loads of reading material and vouchers for goodie bags to collect from Asda/pharmacies - lots of leaflets that will stop you feeling like a wally any longer! Blood tests are taken at the 12 week scan so all you'll have to do is wee in a pot, no other nasties this time! Midwife will talk about where you can have your baby and stuff like that.

Generally it's an initial chat to meet the midwife and for her to meet you. You probably won't see her again until you're 14 weeks, when she'll discuss the results of the 12 week ultrasound and related tests with you (unless you have any probems before then of course).

The midwife will give you contact numbers when you meet her so that if you have any questions that aren't answered by the many books you'll be given you can phone her up. Don't be scared to ask. I'd recommend a book called "the best friend's guide to pregnancy". I think the author is Vicki Lovine but I might be wrong about that. She'll give you all the information that midwives don't think to tell you. It might prevent nasty shocks later ( I had a few of those with my first child!).

Best of luck

wally?

They will probably do a pelvic exam and a pap smear. It doesnt hurt, its just not comfortable.

You can request that they only do the pelvic exam (feeling inside your vagina with two fingers to make sure the uterus is doing okay, and everything is like it should be) and not the papsmear, as most women do NOT want their cervix messed with when theyre pregnant. (a pap smear is when they use metal bills to hold your vagina open a little, and they use a cotton swab to rub your cervix and then test it later for things.)

They'll do your weight and BP, probably schedule you for an ultrasound. You'll have blood work done, and things like that.

You are in control of all your medical care, you do not have to do anything, its your body, your baby, and your right. However, everything they do it for the health of you and baby.

I just dont think messing with a cervix while pregnant is a good idea. Most women dont.

Everywhere is different!!! I booked in when i was 12 weeks as i didn't find out i was pregnant till the week before, filled in lots of paperwork where they ask about family medical history on both sides and yours too!!! They'll roughly work out your dates if you know them and book you in for a scan which will be either 12 or 16 weeks depending on the procedures in your area, mine is at 16 weeks, friends in different areas had theirs at 12 and 20 weeks. They ask how your feeling and whether your taking folic acid and how long for, whether you used to smoke and how many you smoke now, they also do routine bloods for haemoglobin levels, blood type, Rhesus status, also with your consent they'll test you for HIV, Syphilis and your immunity to Rubella!!! They should give you an opportunity to ask any questions you may have so use this!!! Hope this helps and congrats too!!!

They'll take personal and family history, blood pressure, urine check, weight, height. Maybe some blood tests. At 9 weeks it's probably too early to hear baby's heartbeat, but they'll listen at later visits. They don't usually do internal exams, but they may feel your tummy. They'll give you a book about pregnancy and pamphlets galore, contact numbers in case of problems or questions, and talk you through what happens next. They may give you info about antenatal groups in your area as well. Really nothing to worry about, they're usually dead friendly and will put you at ease.

They will chat to you about any concerns, breast feeding, and anything you wish to bring up. The midwife will give you a pack to take home with all pregnancy related topics, and some coupons for free things....

NOt alot. That is just your booking appt. Take all your details, medical history, etc etc, check blood pressure, possibly feel your tummy, find out your dates, if you are not sure of your dates then she will book you for a first scan at about 12 weeks to check the dates properly.
Other than that it is just all the do's and don't in pregnancy ( don't eat liver or soft cheese etc) and introducing herself to you.
Good luck with the pregnancy.

She'll have a chat with you about your lifestyle, medical history, any problems you're having. You'll get weighed, have your blood pressure & urine checked.
She may have a feel at your tummy & chat with you about hospitals you wish to have your baby in & the options available to you.
You won't have a scan until week 12.
I think amosunknow isn't from UK. In the UK a vaginal examination isn't performed as part of 'routine' ante-natal care,so don't go worrying yourself about that.

At my booking app. They took my weight, my height and blood pressure. Took blood, asked a good few questions about my medical history and family. Worked out my due date, gave me my first bounty pack and leaflets about breastfeeding etc and asked if I had any questions!
Nothing to worry about! They won't be fiddling about 'down there' but they might have a wee feel of your tummy!
Congratulations and good luck! ;)

No they certainly won't start fiddling round with you inside. That is not true. Maybe it is Yank thing to go probing round at 9 weeks but certainly not in the UK.
You will fill in forms, answer questions, get given lots of leaflets and basically get to know one another. You are in the UK aren't you? There's a lot of typical NHS paperwork.
Congratulations and good luck with your pregnancy.
