You should thoroughly wash it, pat it dry, and apply some antibiotic ointment and keep it covered with a bandaid. This will help prevent you from getting an infection. By the way, the pain you are experiencing is due to sentitive nerve endings being exposed to the air. Keeping it covered also prevents friction from you shoes and socks which could disrupt wound healing. Feel better soon.

the air will help it to heal yes, but you need to keep it clean and apply the ointment often to keep it from drying out then it will really hurt but the nail may fall off and this is normal, you will need to put a bandage on it if you go out but while you are at home keep it well cleansed and ointment on it and try not to bump into anything when you are in the tub rinse it but dont soak it and try to take ibuprofen often at least every 4 to 6 hours for pain, good luck and take care!......Hotma

Contrary to popular belief, you shouldn't "let it air out". This will just dry the wound out and NOT be conducive to healing. You should keep it loosely wrapped and covered in an antibiotic ointment, such as POLYSPORIN. It will heal on it's own.

Take some aspirin, ibuprofen or something like that. I like vicks 44, really soothes the throat. gargling is fine, but you may be beyond sore throat and have a serious infection. Don't be afraid to go to the hospital, they see it all the time, and if it is strep, the earlier, the better.

I think that it's good to let the sore exposed to the air at home in a sanitary environment... but be careful if you are somewhere dirtier to cover it up.

Air is actually essential. Keep it cleaned, and leave it to air out.
