It seems to have seeded itself and is now rampantly taking over the lawn!

Vine borers? You can actually find their point of entry and manually remove them without (hopefully) doing too much damage to the plant, if you want an organic solution. Other things, like collaring the plant when it is young might work, or go all out and throw down some Sevin powder.

Are you talking about the plant called "Borage"? I've grown it for several years and it's never gotten away from me so I'm a little confused by your question. If you are talking about borage then don't let it go to flower and just pull it out at the end of the season. Can you provide a little more detail in your question?

Borage is a thug, I can understand your concern. I had it in my garden but I've just about eradicated it now.

You just have to learn to recognise the plant whilst it is still young - the leaves tend to be pimply looking and hairy - and remove them.

If you are really good and continue to do it religiously for a couple of seasons they will reduce in number and eventually you will only get the odd one or two rearing their thuggish heads.

Whatever you do don't allow it to seed again. Remember the old adage 'one year's seed, seven year's weed'.
