I have a user at my job that is an applications developer and he has a Dell 2.13GHz Dual-Core, 2048MB RAM and a clean Hard drive. His problem is that the processes that he runs uses up half the memory and he can't open alot of applications. He can't even open Task Manager when he has like 8 programs/folders opened. I have the same exact specs as his PC and I have no problems. What should I do? More RAM? Professional advice would be appreciated.

Some developers assume that they don't have spyware or viruses. They believe that they are too smart to have those problems. So I would first run the full gambit of maintenance steps. (A virus or spyware is the only explanation for using too much RAM).

- run Disk Cleanup - from the System Tools section of Accessories
- Open My Computer, then Right Click on your C drive and pick PROPERTIES. Pick the Tools section and click on CHECK NOW. Check both tests, and YES, let it run after you restart. You see, CHECK DISK will ensure that your hard drive is working completely. This test might take an hour or so.
- run DEFRAG - from the System Tools section of Accessories.

Keep your anti-virus solution up to date, and run a full scan weekly.

Keep your anti-spyware solution up to date, and run a full scan every few days. I recommend the free SpyBot Search & Destroy that you can get from http://www.download.com

Do all of this regularly, and your computer will run better.

In his case, he might have a nasty infection. His BOOT drive should be mounted as a slave in a different computer, and have an anti-virus scan run on it.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

I am a hobby program developer and have never run out of ram before. Run task manager on the side with the 'Performance' tab selected.
If the ram never goes over 2GB while you work I don't think that is the problem. It could be the processor. Take a look at the Quad Core. I have one(the Q6600) and love it! Make sure your mother board is compatible and that you have good power supply.

You can check to see which processes take up the most ram by going to 'processes' in the task manager. Then goto run and type in 'msconfig'. You can then goto the services tab and the startup tab and disable the appropriate programs with CATION. Dont touch system programs.
Also it might be good idea to check if the ram is to blame.

Another thing is the Anti Virus software. Out of all background programs this can be the biggest system resource hog. I suggest that instead of running a constant background check you just run scheduled checks instead.

Well for one thing Design and editing software is very RAM Intensive, The same is true of any Video, or Photo Editing software. There is No way he can possibly get even close to peak performance if he isn't aware of this fact.
Most Video Copying it recommends that you are not using or have other applications open during this proccess.
I know of NO instance where it would warrant having 8 programs open at the same time anyway.
If this guy is an Applications developer, I am President Abraham Lincoln.

i will recommend more RAM, but if he realy need a fast workstation for multi tasking, and he is up to running several programs at the same time. give him another unit of computer and network it. this will greatly help him finishing the job faster.
