You should read the book "British as a second language". Its by a Kenyan on his experience in the UK, and how he was treated by the Brits.
Get away from them ,you can not. Although I live in sunny Africa I'm still confronted by these rude people daily, in my own country!
We are in the same boat. Just smile and wave, you know you are better than them.
Also you should try deal with the trauma, speak to someone.

Sounds like you better bugger off back to St Paul de Vence. If you don't want to associate with anyone, may I suggest a Trappist monastery and a complete vow of silence? I think you're getting way too worked up over something that is just a friendly term.

Of course, you can alienate absolutely everyone by delivering that diatribe whenever they call you mate.

"Mate, is a friendly kind way to greet another person...kind of like 'dude' is here, I would rather they greeted me with that, if I were a guy, than "Hey ***hole"....how do they know where you were born and your past history, if they are just reading your question for the first time...believe me, you won't get called 'mate' much longer...I think you are being far to suspicious, and senstitive...as long as they are not outright insulting you,..get over it

mate is what you call someone, why does that offend you so much? would your rather them say 'oi, you fat frog'
emmigrate if you want, doesnt make that much of different. just dont ***** about the littliest of things.
i live 22 miles away from france, i like it there, but i like it here, i dont mind if people call me mate, unless it is extrememly patronisingly
