I have tried to explain this in posts before, we are all individuals and rather than classing everyone as either 'anti' or 'pro' people should drop the names and start considering the fact that as individuals we all have individual ideas and thoughts on the matter.
People are too quick to preempt what a whole group of people will think and how a whole group of people feel, but surely we all see things slightly differently. Some people are very highly strung and see this as an opportunity to try and overule people though, its best to be a little open minded in my opinion and not dismiss people just because they have a different perspective on things.

Naturally you're allowed to have your own feelings. And I agree that insults are unnecessary. Maybe they are an insight into the intelligence of the contributer. However, by posting a question on here, you are inviting the response. In my opinion it's a pity more don't respond like with like. Serious answers to serious questions and fun answers to fun questions. Frustrating sometimes.

I suppose it's all to do with what we want from it all.

There's a crowd that want to be seen to be sympathetic, and be recognised as sympathetic people. This McCann story has given them a great opportunity to do just that.

And there's another crowd that are sickened at the sight of all those trying to grab the opportunity.

You're right, we do all have our own PRIVATE feelings about the issue, but for some people that would just be a wasted opportunity.

When you have such distasteful behaviour in public, you can expect reactions to fall short of the rules of etiquette.

The last part of your question is also the answer. Because we do all have feelings, often wrapped around with a slight unease and feeling of guilt for things we as parents or carers of siblings have done, we tend to personalise the whole matter.
Attack is the best form of defence and people feel free to meet it out when they can do so from the safety of the sidelines.
Me? I am just to very, very glad that I have never been in their situation. It is unimaginable.
