think about it.................cut decorative holes in the side of the bottle............make one hole large enough to fit the bottom of a cut off pepsi can (about 1 1/2" tall) with the top edge folded or taped for safety........... with a candle melted to the inside bottom of the can , glue the can in the bottom of the bottle.......take a coat hanger or wire and wrap around the top of the bottle for a hanger on the lantern.........glue the celophane to the outside of the bottle over the holes you made leaving one unglued to light the candle......make sure the top is not on the bottle! TAADAADAAAAA! 1instant lantern!

A lantern with plastic bottles? Hmmn. Well, if that's what they wanted - how about arranging a number of bottles in a circle, glued onto a round base. You could put a night-light candle in the middle, wrap wire round the bottles, and if you wrap wire round the top, where the necks are, you could make a carrrying handle of wire also. If a straight-sided lantern is preferred you could arrange the bottles alternate up and down. Good luck.

My first choice would not be plastic. Won't it melt? Why not a tin can? You could poke holes in it to let the light out, or cut a window in it with tinsnips (wear some gloves!) and make a hanger with coat hanger wire.
