How can I get my computer monitor to "wake up" faster?

I scroll the mouse around on a blank screen, and tap the space bar repeatedly for half a minute sometimes before the screen finally "wakes up". I want to just be able to nudge the mouse and it wakes up. I've seen some computers that seem to do that.

A monitor should come out of sleep mode in a couple of seconds.

Are you waking up just the monitor or has the entire system gone to sleep? The system can take a lot longer, especially if it is a few years old.
