It sounds like he was accusing you to cover up his own guilt of doing something he shouldn't be doing. Obviously he's lying about the message being from a long time ago and if he could lie about something that small it makes you wonder what else he's been lying about. If it were me I would give him a chance to explain his self just to hear what he has to say but I don't know if I would be able to trust him. Because every time he says he's doing something going somewhere or is with someone in the back of my mind I'll be wondering "is he really where he says he is and who is he really with is he out dancing with some chic again.

I fail to see what trust has to do with Billy Joel. He's a brilliant songwriter. That makes him one of the people I hold harmless.
