last night, I decided to format my PC, and Partition my harddrive to stop me losing files when I format it again, but when I partitioned the drive, I had both partitions at exactly the same space , IE: 50% each which was fine, but as soon as I put windows back on my system, (XP by the way), I noticed in My computer, i still only had one hardrive listed with the full amount of space IE: 80 Gig, but I wanted 40 on each, can you tell me if windows XP can have a partition on the drive

thank you in advance :)

PS i did, delete partition, and create logical drives and format all of them

during win xp setup it asks if you would like to partition your HD, you need to select this in order for win xp to recognise this

Windows XP will allow you to have multiple partitions. If the drive is showing as one 80 gig partition instead of two 40 gig, then something did not work properly with the partitioning.

You will need to reinstall Windows. During the install (right after you do the F8 to agree) you will be asked about formatting and partitioning. At that point delete the current 80 gig partition and create a 40 gig. Install Windows to that 40 gig partition.

Once Windows is all set up, go into the Control Panel and the Administrative Tools Icon. Go to Computer Management. Under that is a Disk Storage section where you will be able to see, partition and format the remaining 40 gig of the hard drive. If you do it from within Winodws then you will have fewer issues with getting Windows to recognize it.

Hope that helps....

dewcoons has that right. But there is an easier way to the Computer Management program. Right click my computer click manage. Under storage click disk management. you now can make that second partition. Your HDD should be called disk 0. Next to that there is a box that says (C:) 40.0 GB NTFS Healthy (System) and has a blue line on top of it. Next to that should be a box that says 40.0 GB Unallocated and has a black line on top of it. Right click the second one and click new partition. A window should pop up. Click next. Click Primary Partition. Next. Now is where you choose the size. By default it should be the max of the unallocated space. Next. Now you assign a drive letter, like C: or D: or A:. Choose which ever one you want. Next. Now is when you format the partition. KEEP EVERYTHING THE SAME! You can change the name of the drive but that is it. Next. Now it says what your setting are. Click finish and the partition should start formatting.
