Focus on the distance double to that to the mirror. Unless of course you want to have the mirror itself in focus (if it has a nice frame, for example). Then you need to focus both on the mirror and on the reflection... which means that you need to close the aperture, that is, use a high f-number (16 or more) and focus *between* the distance to the mirror and twice that distance... what is called the hyperfocal distance.

You focus on the object reflected in the mirror, so double the distance or more. if you focused on the distance to the mirror, you woulkd end up with an out of focus image.

Any schoolboy will tell you (or at least, they could in my day) that an image in a mirror appears as far behind the plane of the mirror as the object is in front of it. Therefore, you should focus on the reflection, not the mirror plane.

I always focus on the mirror image, making sure its perfectly focused. Generally I do these images failry close up, saw
5' - 10' away. Not further.

You got it. The focal distance is the distance from the camera to the mirror to the subject.

the first answer is wrong!!
the distance is real
the actual distance would be distance to mirror + distance to object (if you were taking a picture of yourself, this would be double the distance to the mirror)

The distance to the mirror.
The distance from the reflection to the mirror is 'apparent' not real.
