i've been using hydrogen peroxide for teeth whitening. i don't dilute it with water. i think the bottle contains about 20 volumes of hydrogen peroxide, can't remeber exactly, but it's 20. ive been using it for 5 days now, and i noticed a lil portion of my gums on the lower set of my teeth has turned whitish. it even hurts a little, like a wound.

can someone help me on my prob? it really bothers me. i dont want to stop using hydrogen peroxide (a short time not using it might be fine) because i want to whiten my teeth. what should i do?

First of all you are supposed to dilute the peroxide when you use it for a mouth wash ( equal parts water and peroxide ,I do 2 cap fulls of each). Second you may have small cuts or irritations on your gums that the peroxide it healing. When you use peroxide to heal wounds they also turn white for a bit. It should go away in a few days. I would stop using the peroxide for 2 days and see if there are any changes.

Hydrogen peroxide is NOT poison, contrary to what my collegue below stated. It's similiar to plain old tap water in it's chemical formulation. If you were able to get a strongly concentrated form of it, I could understand the gum sensitivity but the stuff they sell at the local pharmacy or grocery stores is a very low dilution. As far as using it as a rinse, I have recommended it to many, many of my patients but I always recommend that they dilute it half and half with water. I think your problem lies in the fact that you mixed it with the baking soda and created a chemical reaction that irritated your gums. Please don't try the home remedies that friends suggest, ask a professonal instead. Your gums will eventually calm down but right now the best solution is to make up a rinse of a teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water, swish it around in your mouth and spit it out after about a minute. Do this several times a day. Salt water rinses are very soothing to the gum tissue and will bring down the swelling that occurs when they are irritated. Good luck and I hope that helps a bit.

Check with your dentist. The standard drug store bottle should be mixed 50/50 with water. You should only do it once a week or every 10 days.
