maintaince i worked for a sub contractor for the railroad in the united states and usually it`s the ballast(the gravel bed) that get eroded or the rail get damaged we ran test's monthly( sperry`s rail service) they have equiptment that bounces sonic waves off the rail to test for microscopic cracks in the rail
