Here you go. A hardtop incorporates any vehicle that has a hard top, as in not a convertible.
The fastback designation seperated the two different type of hardtops. Fastback and Coupe. Several different eras of Mustangs offered fastbacks and coupes as option the latest being the fox-body platform which were really hatchbacks, but for all purposes considered fastbacks. The newer Mustangs are styled with a fastback look to them, but are not really considered fastbacks.
As far as engines, the fastbacks always came with a V-8 whenever they were made (unless there is some obscure model I don't know about) The coupes usually came in several engine configuration that allowed them to be purchased with either a 4,6, or 8 cylinder engine depending on the era again. The convertible has always been offered with the same engine combinations as the coupe.
If you live somewhere you'll be driving the car in the cold get the hardtop if its your daily driver. Personally I like the hardtops better in terms of looks, but nothing looks more fun than a Mustangs zipping down the road on a sunny day with the top down. Heck I'm thinking of picking my wife up a convertible just as and excuse so that I can drive it on occasion.

The Hardtop did not have the rear glass slanted as much as the fastback, which had a large rear window, and the roof line would slope back almost to the very back edge of the car. A hard top in Mustang speak had the roof line meet with the trunk at about a75 degree angle. Mustang had fastback from 65-73, in '74 went to a hatchback, not a fastback. The redesign in '79 brought back something like a fastback, but still considered a hatchback since the rear glass opened up to access the rear trunk area. There is a large price difference in the hardtop coupe and fastback for the '65-73 era. Most fastbacks are near convertible prices since fastbacks were never made in as large of numbers as the coupe.
And there were 6 cylinder fastbacks, that was the base engine in the standard fastback from '65-73.

Which are you talking about, late model or classic? Basically hardtops are coupes with trunk (notch backs) and fastbacks are 3 doors except for the first 2 years, which had a small trunk. They all had the same engine options.
Mustang enthusiast since they came out in 1964

Hardtop/Notchback/coupe have a near vertical rear window, The fastback has a slanted rear glass and is much better loking in my opinion. The engines are usually the same in either car.
This applies to 64 1/2 to 73.
74 to 93 were available in a notchback/coupe, Hatchback and convertible. 94-up were all hardtop or convertible.

Mustang has two styles: convertible, which is a soft top and coupe, which is also a fastback or hardtop.
I had a convertible once. Never again. I like a hard top with a sun roof.
