I have had 2 severe (anaphalactic) allergic reactions after eating shrimp. I've eaten shellfish my whole life, but the emergency room/hospital Dr. said you can develop an allergy at any point in life. They told me it could kill me to eat it.
My question is, aside from lobster, shrimp, crab and scallops...what else are considered shellfish? I also like mussels and calamari...are these shellfish too? I just don't want to make a big mistake.

Don't eat seafood. Only like a fish filet and get an Epipen in case of emergency. Go to the allergist and take this very seriously. Do not mess around and when in doubt don't it CAN kill you.

The best way to find out is to have allergy testing done. Not everyone has the same reaction. When I eat shellfish I projectile vomit, swell up, and have trouble breathing. This happens within minutes of eating it. I have to have an epinephrine shot. I can't even go to restaurants that serve shellfish because being even near it gives me hives. My friend is also allergic to shellfish and she just gets a few red spots on her skin. Taking a Benadryl takes care of that. I would recommend getting testing done and avoiding shellfish until you get the results.

The best way to tell if it's food poisoning is that anyone else who ate it will get sick too. You can have allergies w/out being in Phase I, which you described when you said no hives, swelling, redness or problems breathing. If you had hives, swelling, redness and trouble breathing, you would be having a Phase I reaction-which is a true emergency and requires instant medical attention. Some itching and skin irritation are involved in most allergies, so you're most likely not allergic. I would stop eating mussels if I were you, b/c you definitely have an adverse reaction to them.

If it wears a shell while it's alive, it's a shellfish. And that does include mussels and calamari. Clams and oysters are others that you want to avoid.

That's awful, I know: I happen to like shellfish a lot.

Good luck!

Mussels are in a shell too. I would say that calamari you would be fine. I personally would stay away from it all. In some plants they process shellfish in with the other fish so there could be cross contamination that could affect you too.
