some people need to feel there is something higher than themselves that will help them in times of trouble .
also i think it's very hard to go against a religion that you have been raised by your parents to believe is true and absolute. no one wants to think their parents are wrong - most of us need their wisdom at some point in our lives and need to trust their judgement.
there is also the ' so many people can't be wrong ' concept - well alas they can.
personally i don't believe in any deity and i trust myself to make good judgements

It's more than wishful thinking or fear. People need to believe there's something more than the life they have. All around us we see undeserved suffering. We see the Planet being made waste by those who care only for the present. People long for something better and many find it in religion and in belief in a better life after death. It is when religion turns violent, when one group wants to kill everyone who doesn't believe as they believe, that it becomes yet another source of suffering for the Human Race.

Sophisticated superstitions like the belief in the existence of god, are quiet effective in the intimidation of people, especially uneducated one, in order to make them obedient followers.
It is not long ago, in Europe, that people, who were suspected of deviating from the standards set by the religious authorities, were roasted on big fires in a public place.

Well, historically some religions have to be superstition because some Gods have claimed to be all powerful. What you are talking about is a matter of faith.

I believe in God, but, hypothetically, if God was a fictional character, because the idea of God and heaven makes life seem worthwhile and meaningful even if their lives are absolutely pointless and hopeless (i.e. Religion is the opium of the masses)

Referring only to the christian god:
Blame the Church, who made a bid for political power in the late 1st century.
The bishop Eusibius (sp?), a sponsor for Josephus, wrote 2 texts that contained information on how mistruths, lies, and omission were to be used, in order for the still forming church to gain and retain power: In his Ecclesiastical History, he writes, "We shall introduce into this history in general only those events which may be useful first to ourselves and afterwards to posterity." (Vol. 8, chapter 2). In his Praeparatio Evangelica, he includes a chapter titled, "How it may be Lawful and Fitting to use Falsehood as a Medicine, and for the Benefit of those who Want to be Deceived" (book 12, chapter 32).
By becoming a political force, the church gained power (via superstition of the afterlife) over EVERYONE...kings and peasants. During the Renaisance, that power waned slightly due to certain scientific discoveries (the church tried to supress these, and try certain individuals for heresy, but eventually had to accept the facts). Vatican city (the smallest country on the planet) is a testament to their political power.
The church had a stranglehold on many parts of everyday life, primarily education. By controlling information, they had another means of controlling the populace (keep 'em dumb, and they'll believe what we tell them).
By ingratiating itself into so many aspects of everyday life, the belief became not only paramount, but tradition. Tradition is a hard thing to break, especially on a scale such as the church created, and continues to this day. It is, however, eroding.

Because it is not a man-made superstition and God is not fictional - it's the truth

But there is no viable proof of any God, a book isn't good enough, people CLAIMING to see Jesus resurrect isn't good enough, people look to religion as a way to explain life cause most people just can't grasp reality. That's just me. The majority of hardcore religious people really need help, I mean of course I would love to know that there is a heaven and I can go there when I die and be happy for the rest of eternity but no proof of it. I'm not anti religious and an atheist just to be different or to be an asshole, I just think religion is a escape for people who want to explain things but can't.
Thats my two cents.

Because many are brainwashed from an early age, threatened with hell and damnation and shunned by family and societies if they choose not to follow the same cult!
