If you earn over $50,000/yr then you have to pay an increased medicare levy which is equivalent to about a years private health insurance. So there's no point not getting private health. If you earn under this then it becomes an issue. Insurance is one of those things you hope you waste your money on if you know what I mean. If you get really sick you'll wish like hell you had it.

Waste of money. I don't have private health insurance and pay my way. I get rebates from Medicare. The only reason to have private insurance is if you are earning over the threshhold and have to pay the Medicare surcharge. In that case, get the cheapest health cover available that stops you paying the surcharge but never tell anyone you have private.
I visit the dentist twice a year, I am having an operation next week, I see the doctor regularly and still pay far less than people with private health insurance.
You would be far better off paying the insurance fees into a separate bank account and using that money if you need it. Don't forget, if you have an accident you are taken to a public hospital which is completely free. If you are prepared to wait a bit for elective surgery, that's free too.
The private health funds waste a lot of money by paying out for quack medicine. Don't support them.

It depends on your circumstances. If you are a young couple intending to have children, then it might be worth while.
I had private insurance for about 25 years and it was a total waste of money. I had two operations in that time and the insurance probably only covered about half.
Since then, I have not had insurance for at least 10 years and the cost of doctors payments are considerably less than the premiums would have been. I am currently recovering from treatment for throat cancer and have received excellent treatment through the public system at virtually no cost overall.

I hv used the public health system since 1974 and hv experienced no problems. In tha time Ihav had 3 ops, I was private and the service there was too expensive and overrated. I will never join a medical fund where 75% of the fees go in keeping the 'fat cats"

Unless you are someone with ongoing health problems, it's a waste of money.
