I have a Fiat Punto from 1994 and it's still perfect, without any problem. the mileage is 95,000 kms and so I think it's nothing bad for a compact car. Here in Italy Rovers have a bad name cause of their electrical problems and so I can't suggest you to buy it. The Vauxhall Astra (which is Opel Astra here, I presume) it's a good german car, even if the design isn't a masterwork and the car hasn't so much more quality inside than the Punto. Besides, the Astra you would buy hadn't too much accessories... Anyway, at the end I think that Punto or Astra should be the best choice.

My cousin once drank petrol. He wasn't a Vauxhall Astra, though.
Hey, I've just been told that Astras are the most average car in Britain. Now that is useful information.

Any vehicle badly maintained will not give its best,in either petrol or diesel When considering a vehicle its not always best to go for the newest but one with low mileage and a service record which can be authenticated Maybe this is synical but try to find out the most common car theft in your area and then avoid that type and model Be lucky

It really depends on the model and engine size. On a 1.4i 16v the fuel economy from vauxhalls website says its 35.3 (urban), 56.5 (extra urban) and 46.3 (combined). These figures are pretty average. I wouldn't say they drink petrol. If you do a lot of mileage spesh motorway miles a diesel's probably best. They're a lot better than they used to be and you don't really lose much power compared to a petrol.
