I'll assume you have done all the obvious already like decrease caffiene intake, don't eat big meals just before sleeping. etc.
Take magnesium supplements - i had the same problem- suffered with insomnia for a few yrs started taking various over the counter sleeping pills to help but they all made me feel worde the next day- My doc adviced magnesium supplement. I take the Calcium 1000mg and magnesium 500mg (2:1 ratio apparently helps with the absor[tion of mag. Try it it approx 30mins before you go to sleep. They are dietary supplements therefore don't really cause any problems.
Check out the links before you buy.

1. take a little as possible, if you (for example) take 2 benadryl try one??? If you normally take a heavy duty one try to switch to something lighter, gradually get yourself to where your at least not taking anymore then you actually need to.
2. Try to relax, avoid watching a lot of TV or video games before bed, (as hoaky as it may sound) close your eyes as you lay down and and SLOWLY count by 20's (ones gets too boring)
3. If things don't change you might ask your Dr. about a sleep study there might be more going on then you think.

It's so tough. A few at dwelling tips you'll take a look at are hot milk, a snoozing masks (sounds foolish but it surely fairly has made a change in my being ready to go to sleep). If it's fairly unhealthy possibly move to the surgeon and ask for treatment.

In my experience (I have trouble sleeping as well), Pick a time you want to go to bed and then stay awake until that time; if it 8pm, stay up 24 hours until 8 the next day, then go to bed. Set your alarm for 6am and get up when it goes off. If you continue going to bed at 8pm and waking at 6 for a while, it will become natural to your body.
If that hasn't worked after a few weeks, I'd advise seeing a sleep therapist.

Don't eat 4 hours prior to going to bed. Go for a walk or do approximately 30 minutes mild or 15 minutes of vigorous exercises prior to bedtime.
