My hubby just told me that he bleeds when he puts his hand down. When he keeps his arm elevated, it stops.....

If he has already been treated at the ER, than work with him at home. Since the area can't be stitched, it will ooze for quite a while.
1] keep the dressing [ bandage ] clean and dry.
2] keep the hand elevated for 24 hours - it will decrease or stop the bleeding, prevent more bruising, and prevent more pain from increase in bruising or swelling. Sit and rest.
3] don't use the hand for 24 hours, if at all possible - wiggle fingers and wrist, but don't pick up anything or use the hand.
4] does he have a follow up appointment, or any ointment? Did he get a tetanus shot? [ definitely needed a tetanus shot ].
5] this wound will heal very slowly - keep a close eye on it, since the main protection against infection is gone.
Watch for:
fever
redness spreading down finger
swelling increase after 24 hours
discharge - green, yellow, or pus-like.

I sure hope it has stopped now. If it hasn't stopped tell him to keep pressure on it and go back to the ER. There are dressings available that will help stop the bleeding. My friend sliced the top of her finger off and they couldn't stitch that either, she also had to raise her hand for at least an hour to slow the bleeding. Pressure is all important and if they can put a special dressing on it with calcium alginate (e.g. Caltostat) that will help stem the blood flow. If he is bleeding a lot still they may even want to do coagulation tests. Make sure he is not on any aspirin; aspirin can make bleeding worse.

Hopefully by now it has stopped, but if not try elevating it to at least heart level, he can put pillows beside him if he wants to sit. Also get an ice pack or frozen bag of veggies, and place a towel between his hand and the ice pack and put that on for 20 minutes, then remove for 20 minutes, then repeat. I would do that for at least 3 intervals and see what happens then.
Now if it is bleeding and soaking the gauze, do not take the gauze off, just add more, and keep reapplying it will eventually stop, but if you are taking the gauze off each time, then it will reopen the wound and not allow the bleeding to stop.
Best of luck!

yes you have to keep ur finger above ur heart and i would keep pressure on it with the gauze if u keep pressure on it it will stop bleeding also get some vaseline and if its not to deep its problly ok anyways i would put that in the cut too it will act ask a piece of skin so to say and stop bleeding.the doctors should have told ur hubby that to begin with.like my blood is thin because i drink alot so i tend to bleed more.

Keep the hand elevated above his head. If it keeps bleeding even when elevated, go back to the E.R. Also, if he takes blood thinners like aspirin/coumadin/plavix this will cause his bleeding to be more difficult to control.
Good luck with your sore paw!

Time to head to the ER for some stitches! If you wait any longer, he'll be needing a few units of blood too!

Yes, if the ER took too long to stitch it, then it will bleed for a long time. You have a short window for stitches, a busy ER will not get to you in time.

sounds like he needs to go to another hospital and get the vein sewn together a young lady i met cut her finger that way and it wouldn't stop pumping/spraying out blood until she got the vein sewn, after that buy some grape juice and have him drink it to restore some of the blood

Pressure needs to be applied to the area immediately to slow down the blood flow.
Make a tourniquet by wrapping cloth around the finger, BUT NOT TOO TIGHTLY,,,as you DON'T want to cut blood circulation.
He REALLY needs to go back to the Hospital...Good luck,,hope he heals ok!
