Because they can't think for themselves just yet. Our civilization is light years away from being able to properly philosophize why we're here without equating it to being the work of an almighty creator or something else supernatural or mystical. And you're right - it IS silly. Organized religion is like one huge bout of mass hysteria. If people could let go of all those old deities and learn to live good and decent lives because it's just what we should do and not to appease a "creator" this world would be a much more humane/sane place to live. But humanity needs something to cling to - those old ideals and ways of life have become tradition and have become ingrained in our cultures. As long as people feel as though they need to be rewarded(or that some need to be punished) with an afterlife there will be believers.

I believe in God mostly because of faith. Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." But, if you need proof just look at the mathmatical probability of the universe being formed by mere chase. You'd have a better chase of sticking the parts to a DVD player in a bag and giving it a shake every day and one day you open the bag to find a working DVD player. Now that is what seems silly to me. Romans 1:20 "For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse." I'd like to write more but I think you should talk to someone in person who can point out scripture and events in their own life that could give evidence of a very real God.

Would you be surprised that not everyone laughs at the idea of "mythology"? Have you ever heard of Asatru? This spiritual path believes in, and worships the Nordic Gods (Odin, Thor, etc) much like the Greeks worshipped their Gods long ago. And, there is such a thing as "Hellenistic Pagans", a sect labelled as "witchcraft" who worship the Greek Gods to this day. But to answer your question ... People believe in God because there are higher spiritual powers that govern our lives to one degree or another, and God is just one of those faces that people have put on that spiritual existence.

You know thats what I always think I mean theres no actual proof that god exits and theres the whole thing with evolution and stuff and yet in the bible it says that when the first man and woman were made they had clothes and they looked human and everything but then you look at like all these caveman pictures and stuff and I dont know its just really confusing sometimes I choose not to belive in anything until I get actual proof that it exists

Well in psychology man created the concept in God in order to explain the mysteries of life. Besides when a civilization grows so does the need to explain the world they live in. But people believe in God because it gives us comfort to know that we are more then people and when we die our soul will return to God. Whichever way you view it God is what you make him to be but even Albert Einstein believed there is more then a scientific explanation to our universe. Remember we cant see matter but its all around us. Before scientist laughed at Black holes and now they accept it. Just because you cant see God and there isn't a way to explain him doesn't mean he cant be. God is someone who loves you and watches over us and yeah I know that maybe my explanation isn't the best but think about it. The world cant be wrong that there is more out there God!.

I think because it's scary to think that there's nothing waiting for us on the other end and were not just going to riot in the ground. It's helps us feel less cheated for doing the right thing when we rather not. How many people would do half the nice things they do if there didn't believe they're going to rewarded in the end? Maybe it helps those who believe to feel less alone. Of course I'm just stating a few thing I think about when I think about my own faith It doesn't apply to everyone.

some people can not deal with the idea that this life is all they have. for a person to honestly sit and think this is it, a lot of them would go insane, they would do every thing in their own power to invent a fountain of youth, and so much more in an attempt to stay alive longer.
the thought of this being your only life makes your life worth more, but also makes some feel very scared. that is when religion comforts them.
They are not hurting anyone, they are mentally weak and need the comfort of something, so leave them alone with their comfort zone.

People have their own beliefs. We shouldn't laugh, because it's an insult, and it's somehow counted as discrimination. People believe in god because of religion, culture, and tradition. For example, if your ancestors have been Catholics or Camonists, then there's a good chance that the current generation are Catholics or Camonists. Sadly, people misunderstand and keep on discrimination [what they call is "teasing"]

I think the answer is different from person to person, so I'll tell you why I do.
I was brought up going to church, so at first it just kinda was, you just did it, but you didn't have any real faith. Probably around when I became a teenager is when I actually started believing. I prayed and stuff just because I was supposed to, but then, no time in particular, I could tell that there was a God, when I prayed I was actually talking to someone, and times when I was scared and asked him to help me I could sense him.
So I guess, in short, my heart told me he existed.

People believed in him initially to make sense of their enviornment when they developed a curiosity. Since then it has become a part of culture and is passed down through the generations. Also non-believers would be killed off if they became vocal so the belief in a religion became a powerful political/social force and sustained itself in that way.
