PT 109
Dramatization of President John F. Kennedy's war time experiences during which he captained a PT boat, took it to battle and had it sunk by a Japanese destroyer. He and the survivors had to make their way to an island, find food and shelter and signal the Navy for rescue.

Ive seen too many too list them all but here are some that come to mind:
K19 Widow Maker
U571
Hunt for Red October** (on my top 5 of all times)
Top Gun
Many of the rest are older movies and I dont know all their names. Do some research on John Wayne war movies, he starred in several.
Most the movies I know are submarine based or aviation based. A couple SEAL based movies too. I dont think I've seen many good movies about other Navy stuff. On a similiar note I was happy to see the Coast Guard finally get a movie out there...
and not a movie but JAG was an excellent tv series that often took them aboard ships...

If you want to see a great movie based on Submarine operations during the Cold War watch "The Hunt for Red October", as a navy submariner I highly recommend it.
as for other movies there is a good sci-fi movie about a Navy nuclear aircraft-carrier going back in time, were you see aircraft-carrier operation in detail, filmed on a real nuclear aircraft carrier, the USS Nimitz CVN-68, the movie is sci-fi (time travel) but the life in the carrier and the Navy fighter plane/ship operations are all real...the movie is "The Final Countdown" with Kirk Douglas..it is pretty good.
enjoy!
as for "lilone_onpnt02" comment that "the Navy is not all that..." clearly you never served in ANY part of the Navy kid...specially the Nuclear Submarine Force, like I did. If you had, most of your life would be secret like mine and your memories would make you smile at the little and few things movies are allow to show you about that life....

Hi.
Give up movies and start reading.
The best documentary to watch is "Victory At Sea".
Get the books "At Dawn We Slept" by Gordon W. Prange. It was the base for the movie " Tora Tora Tora".
Another book by him was "Miracle At Midway", another great book.
Get a copy of "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors" by James D. Hornfischer. It tells the story of a few Jeep carriers and a few destroyers that turned a Japanese fleet in the battle off Samar in the Philippines.
For movies I would recommend, "Tora, Tora, Tora", "Midway", "In Harms Way", "Mr. Roberts", "The Caine Mutiny", "The Bridges at Toko Ri", The Sand Pebbles", "Run Silent Run Deep".
These are my favorites.

Okay ... let's see NAVY movies, huh?
I guess if we're including naval aviators, Top Gun was pretty good in its time. (A little homo-erotic when I see it today - but that's just 'cuz Val Kilmer calls it the gay-est movie he's ever been in).
There's a whole genre of submarine films that I enjoy, Crimson Tide... K-19 the Widowmaker... Hunt for Red October.
If you're including "war" films: Midway was a darn good film.
Then there's films which have some naval influences: The Final Countdown, McHale's Navy, Master and Commander (it's more sailing ships than modern navy)
... *shrug* ... enjoy!

My favortie Navy movie is "Mr. Roberts", but there are many others. "Das Boot" is available in the US on DVD.
I don't know of any dealing with riverine units in Vietnam, but you might try "They Were Expendable", a John Wayne movie about PT boats in the Second World War.
"Top Gun" is probably the best known Navy movie, but I grew out of that silly piece.

Watch "Das Boot". This is a German film which follows a submarine crew during the second world war. Absolutely amazng film. Captures the atmosphere on a sub perfectly and is not pro nazi!!!! I know you can buy it in Britain, not sure about the US: Unless you speak German you'll have to watch a dubbed version or with subtitles but don't let it put you off. It is a corker of a film.

I'm not into combat films, had my share of action in the Marines, but what I enjoy are comedies about the Navy, and the movie that comes to mind is called:
"UP PERISCOPE", starring Kelsey Grammar
Terrific movie, try it you might like it!

I thought The Caine Mutiny (1954) was a good movie set on a Navy ship.

my personal favorite is "They Were Expendable" another John Wayne Movie.
and of course, the BEST documentary period is "Victory at Sea"
Frankly, the drivel Hollywood puts out now is nothing to write home about. I mean, when the US Naval Academy declines to allow filming of the movie "Annapolis" on their grounds, something is wrong with the veracity, don't you think?
