Communion:
Catholics - no longer bread and wine, but body and blood
Lutheran - bread and wine in and with the body and blood
Saints:
Catholic - ask the saints to intercede on their behalf, believe that only those so named are saints
Lutheran - we are all saints
Prayer:
Catholic - again, intercessions
Lutheran - we have an open line with God and have no need to ask anyone to intercede on our behalf.
Purgatory:
Catholic - definite option
Lutheran - either Heaven or Hell, no in between
Pope:
Catholic - head of the church, speaks directly with God
Lutheran - he's just another man
Priesthood:
Catholic - celibate
Lutheran - either celibate or married, their choice
Church attendance:
Catholic - want them to attend weekly mass, but they also have Holy days of obligation, where they are basically required to go.
Lutheran - want them to attend weekly divine service, but are highly encouraged, not obligated.
Confession:
Catholic - private confession to a priest to recieve penance and forgiveness
Lutheran - public confession, with silence to confess to God in your heart, and then forgiveness. No penance required.
Sacraments:
Catholic - 7
Lutheran - 2, the others are not sacraments, but are highly regarded and are important in our lives within the church.
Justification:
Catholic - salvation through grace and good works
Lutheran - salvation through grace, which in turn creates a desire to do good works, but they are not essential to salvation.
Daquirikiss: Communion is NOT symbolic to us, it is the REAL presence. Many other protestant denominations believe it is merely a symbol, but not Lutherans.

The Lutherans broke aside from the Catholics underneath Martin Luther since they discovered many matters approximately the Catholic religion to be immoral or simply no longer proper. For illustration, they hostile the promoting of indulgences, or the inspiration that you just would purchase your means into heaven. They suppose that the individuals must be ready to worship and discover the which means of God's phrase on their possess (Catholic offerings had been constantly in Latin on the time), so Martin Luther teamed up with Johan Guttenburg, the inventor of the printing press, to provide copies of the Bible translated into German, and he wrote hymns within the language of his individuals. I suppose Lutherans handiest suppose in four of the 7 Catholic sacraments, being baptism, affirmation, communion, and matrimony. Out of enjoy, I discover Lutherans to be moderately extra liberal and accepting, (even though no longer all people always suits that description).

I think the whole Martin Luther 95 Thesis on the Catholic church should give a clear distinction between the two sects. But here's some anyways...
Catholics don't like birth control
Lutherans don't want as many babies
Catholics believe that the wine and bread actually becomes the body and blood and Christ as it is eaten
Lutherans believe that it's a symbolism of the Last Supper
Catholics believe attending church every Sunday and confessing your sins to a man of God is a pathway to Heaven
Lutherans believe simply believing in God and confiding in God only is a pathway to heaven
Catholics believed that the Bible should be in Latin, making it easier to control the common people by telling them their own interpretation of the Bible and they had to believe the Church since they couldn't speak Latin
Martin Luther believed that the Bible should be interpreted by the common people themselves, and translated it into the vernicular (German).
Catholic priests are celibate for faith in God
Lutherans are against this and have wives and children
